Using Tree Trimming Tools For Safety, Health and Appearance

As any good craftsman will tell you, using the right tool for the right job is critical and nothing could be truer when it come to trimming your trees and shrubs. Trees, although remarkably resilient, can be badly injured when pruned incorrectly, so it’s important to understand the proper application of the various tree trimming tools available. It’s also important to familiarize yourself with the process of pruning and the reasons for doing it.

Most trees, except for conifers, are best pruned when dormant, e.g.; the early spring. This prevents the excessive flow of sap and promotes rapid healing to the cuts made. Unless the purpose of trimming was for health reasons, it’s usually not necessary to apply a wound dressing – in fact it can be undesirable and inhibit healing in many cases, which may lead to further decay of the supporting trunks.

We trim trees for safety, health and appearance, and we need to plan accordingly. In February or March in the northern hemisphere, we want to tackle the removal of larger limbs using a chainsaw or pruning saw. Making sloping cuts just above the branch collar of each limb will promote quick growth of wound wood around the cut area.

Contrary to popular belief, the practice of topping a tree can result in the eventual death of it. Instead, a carefully approached crown reduction will achieve the same goals and minimize damage to the tree. If the health of the tree is in question, such as a prevalent disease, don’t forget to sanitize your tree trimming tools before starting on the next tree. This will minimize the risk of infecting healthy trees.

Smaller branches, twigs and sprouts are best removed with either pruning shears or a loper, which will make clean cuts without tearing or shredding the adjacent limbs. This type of pruning may be done year round and is usually done to promote growth and appearance. It’s always best to use bypass style hand pruners as these slice cleanly through smaller branches.

When finished and cleaning up, you may be tempted to drag the debris left over out to the curbside for removal, but consider this. Purchasing or renting a wood chipper will allow you to convert all of the debris into a mulch to use in your garden come springtime. This type of recycling is natural and healthy, and is certainly better than dumping it in a landfill.

Whether you’ve got one small tree or several acres of them, knowing when and how to prune your trees is just as important as knowing how to use the right tree trimming tools for the job!
