Name a tree that is most perfect for Christmas, and chances are, you'll have but one answer: the pine tree. With its long, needle-like leaves bundled in a cone-shaped foliage that points upwards to the skies, the pine tree has become one of the universal symbols for the merriest day of the year. Annually, people bring home some pines to decorate them with colorful balls, mistletoes, stars, dancing lights, and golden sprinkles. Since the tradition started, Christmas never seems complete without this tree gracing the household, complete with all the ornaments customarily attached to its stems and foliage.

And though there are around 35 different species of pines, all of them share the same prominence, especially in places enjoying colder climate and during the Christmas season.

Indeed, cold climate is one of the needs of the pine tree. Its rather brittle leaves cannot withstand the heat of the more humid months. They're just too small and thin, and they can only hold so much water, that sheer heat would be enough to dehydrate them.

It is for this reason that a pine tree also needs moist soil. The soil must be able to retain a lot of water so that the said tree can feed from it for a long, long time, especially during the non-winter season. A lot of horticulturists employ mulching to help the soil retain a certain amount of water. Mulching refers to the method of spreading leaves and straw over the soil to increase its water-retentive qualities.

Aside from this, pines are known to be durable, not really when it comes to their foliage, rather, in reference to their barks. In fact, pines are favorite trees among furniture manufacturers, as these plants provide durable wood that are transformed into equally durable products.

Some pines bear flowers which are called cones. They are named as such because of their rather peculiar shape. They give off a pleasant scent that further makes pines truly desirable additions to any garden or lawn.

Pines, however, require occasional trimming. Their foliage can potentially shoot at different directions, and it's up to the owner to make sure that the pine will retain its shape. After all, it is their cone-like shape that gives these trees their unique personality that is very well known all over the world.

If you wish to take home a pine this coming Christmas, make sure that you'll have the space for the same. Pines can grow as tall as 40 feet, and if your lawn or garden is surrounded by structures and power lines, adopting a pine can pose quite a problem. However if you are looking for pine tree you can check them out here.
