Celebrating The Palm Tree

A lot of landscapers, professionals and casual alike, want to capture that tropical feel for their lawn or garden. The best way to do this, of course, is to take components from tropical locales and transplant them to the project area. One such component, and perhaps the most effective one, is a palm tree.

A palm tree belongs to the genus Arecaceae (also known as Palmae in some circles). Its distinctive features are the following:

* Branchless trunks that can grow as high as 40 feet.
* Stems that shoot out from the top of the trunk.
* Long, thin, palmate leaves that shoot out from the said stems.

There are many plants that belong to the Palm family, but they all share the features above, varying only in the average sizes. Currently, there are more than 300 trees and plants belonging to this genus, and a lot of them are common in the mainland.

This tree type is also known for being resistant to all kinds of weather and climatic conditions. Tracing their origin in the tropics, they could withstand the scorching heat of the summer months. But they are tolerant against the biting cold as well.

Palms also require little maintenance. An adequate amount of sunlight and ample supply of water will be enough to keep them healthy. They grow well in most kinds of soil types. Their roots are capable of retaining water for many, many days.

These facts make palms ideal landscape trees in many areas. They are not picky. And neither are they demanding for the lawn owner.

Some palms bear fruits, others bear flowers, and a few bear both. The sheer variety available for the landscape artist makes a palm tree quite a versatile option for quite a number of design possibilities.

Many people also claim that palms have a unique and mysterious way of inviting a cool breeze. Whether their long, thin leaves serve as wind callers, or whether this belief is merely a myth, the fact remains that the mere sight of a palm tree can conjure images of some exotic island perfect for hours of rest and relaxation.

The best uses of palms seem to be by a pond-type water garden to truly capture a tropical flavor for the landscape. But even if these trees are planted on areas without any waterscapes, they will still bring the environment to life. Their mere presence adds many splendors to the garden or lawn.
